When attending the Digital Branding Analytics Miami 2019 Conference, I was exposed to Mike Kappitt. Mike is currently the EVP for Bloomin’ Brands and the President for Carraba’s Italian Grill, and if there is something that caught my attention was the title of his presentation: “Marketing = Math + Magic”. As an engineer and marketer myself, I often try to connect my data driven background to the Marketing world to create what I call “The True Marketing Mix”.

Many times, my Marketing side tends to think that it is all about how creative I can be with the Marketing campaigns I am working on. Other times, my mind automatically goes to the data that should drive those campaigns not focusing at all in what the creative will look like. Finding a balance in these two is what makes Data-Driven Marketing and Content-Driven Marketing the key to successful promotional efforts.

Mike also brought up an interesting point, in the restaurant industry, Operations drive Marketing and not the other way around. The customer experience is the most important thing. Having the right food and the right service is what can make the right marketing succeed in this type of industry. But for me, this applies beyond this. When the right product is exposed at the right time, to the right audience, there is very little chance for error when using the right communication channel. At the end, Marketing is a combination between “Math + Magic”.
